Merry Christmas!

December 25th, 2006 by Howard | 1 Comment | Filed in Main

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Christmas Shopping

December 23rd, 2006 by Howard | No Comments | Filed in Main

Not really. Believe it or not, despite being male, I finished my Christmas Shopping yesterday morning. A full two days before Christmas! Broke my record. Indeed.

This morning however, I wanted to swing by Target to pick up something else, not related to Christmas, and my wife thought I was nuts. I explained to her that no one, absolutely no one in this country will get up early in the morning and go anywhere or do anything. So, this is a photo of the Target. Empty.  This was about 7 AM. Now, about 2 PM, I am sure there are dead bodies in the aisle, and a block of humanity so thick you can’t even see the floor.

Merry Christmas folks!

Insanity at Higher Ed

December 15th, 2006 by Howard | 2 Comments | Filed in Main

So, the email today requested my participation in a meeting next week. Thursday, the 19th.

I emailed back that Tuesday was the 19th, and Thursday was the 21st. Which was it?

Tuesday. Ok. I was available

This part folks, is where my day started to drive down Fruitcake Lane. Insanity Avenue. Whacko Way.

Yes, I know, just working at an institution of higher education automatically means you have to work with incompetents, weirdos, whackos, the mentally challenged and cranky arrogant bastards such as myself. Let’s face facts, the very nature of higher education supports, no, downright cheers insanity and incompetence! One of the reasons I work in higher ed is because I am not normal myself. I could never survive in the stuffy corporate world where actual results are requested. Plus, they wouldn’t let me do my magic tricks probably.

On any normal day we will ride on the shoulder of the highway of stupidity, Occasionally the train will jump the tracks and plow full steam through the fields of fickleness. But rarely do we start off the day derailed from any trace of reality and just drive pedal to the metal into the valley of wet weasel madness going deeper and deeper, gaining speed all day long. Today though, was one of those days.

So, I replied via email that I was available on the date and at the time specified.

Where can we meet? Came the email.

I’m thinking to myself, well, you know, you are setting up the meeting, maybe you could figure that part out? But, it was as I said, very early in the morning, when I am very sensitive and caring and all that crap.

I replied that there were several places on campus, that it depended on how many people were attending this meeting that you are setting up.

The next email – How many people will be attending?

OK, let’s recap for any other higher education folks who might be reading.

  1. A nitwit emails me to invite me to a multi-departmental meeting.
  2. They don’t have the day and date in sync
  3. They don’t know where the meeting is going to be held
  4. Then……they ask me, just one of the participants, how many people will be attending the meeting that they are organizing.

At this point, I stared into my empty mug of strong coffee and decided to go get even stronger coffee. But not until I deleted all of the emails and then pretended that it was all just a lack of proper caffeine orientation.

Oh yeah….as the day progressed, this proved to be one of the more lucid moments.

Which explains why now I have already downed two tall glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Peace out people.

More Evidence of South Florida Being Third World?

December 9th, 2006 by Howard | 5 Comments | Filed in Main

I had to make a delivery to the Humane Society of Broward County yesterday. Three kittens in our back yard. We already have four cats, which is two over the limit.  There are so many cats in South Florida that all the private organizations and homes trying to take in stray cats are consistently overfull. Kittens we figured would stand an excellent chance of being adopted. And since we have created a bird sanctuary in our backyard, the cats running off with birds in their teeth seemed somewhat out of place.  We do our best to deter the cats, and we relocate some to good homes. But sometimes I just have to capture them and head off to the Humane Society of Broward. As I did yesterday, and observed this sign, which was one of four warning people that there are some friggin weird ass people in South Florida!!!!  Dare I say it? Third Worlders.

Do things like this go on in Ohio I wonder?

Peace out people.
