C.S. Lewis would respond to people who talked about having a soul this way:
“You don’t have a soul.”
Which I imagine would cause them to be taken aback somewhat. Then he would finish his thought this way:
“You do not have a soul……..you ARE a soul.”
Pause for impact….
“What you have is a body.”
Einstein the great scientist had an interesting way to describe human beings. He knew that matter and energy was really the same thing, just in different forms and locations. The concept of a solid object is a human one, not reality. Within our bodies are molecules, billions of them, and within them are atoms and within atoms are protons, neutrons and electrons orbiting the center. There is a great amount of space within atoms. The concept of something being really solid is false. And since matter is just another form of energy, this is why Einstein called the human body “congealed energy.” We are just energy stuck together really tight.
Somehow I see a connection between what C.S. Lewis said and what Einstein said.
Just something to think about.

Einstein was right as far as he went. Then Neils Bohr came up with Quantum Mechanics which stated that things behave at the molecular level subject to probability and are never really predictable, and, since humans are made of molecules, they aren’t really predictable, either, I suppose. So far, all of Quantum theory’s predictions have been proven to be true. Then to add insult to injury, “empty space” is not really empty. Where I am PBS is rerunning two great series – 1. Fabric of the Cosmos and 2. The Elegant Universe. Both are in the Nova series. As for C J Lewis, I don’t know a thing in the world about him. P.S. The reason solids seem so solid is the so called Electromagnetic Force.
Steve, sounds like you have a better understanding of this subject than I do. It really is amazing stuff. The Higgs Boson is another interesting story. Sort of like glue that holds the universe together…..
