Sunday Night Ramblings

October 26th, 2008 by Howard | Filed under Main.

I’m flying to the Great Northwest later this week, which always throws my control freakness meter out of whack. If there is one place you don’t have much control it is sitting in a skinny seat on a crowded airplane at 35,000 feet. Ugh. I’m not particular fond of people in general, so being crammed in an aluminum tube for hours on end with them doesn’t help matters much. But, I do what I can to create the false impression of being in control. I pack two days early. I triple check everything. I get movies to watch on my Macbook to keep me occupied. I triple check the reservations. It helps some.

One thing I needed for this trip was a cheap simple back pack to carry my Macbook and some other items. I found one at K-Mart for $19.99. Just perfect. Do you know the cashier tried to sell me insurance on the damn thing? A $20 dollar cheap backpack, and she wanted me to pay $2.69 for insurance. I declined the offer.

I booked this trip through Orbitz, and I wanted three short flights, as opposed to one short flight and one really long flight. My back can’t take those airplane seats for long. I found one finally that consists of two 3 hour flights and one short hour long flight. Both going out and back. Trouble is, I am on a bunch of airlines. American, United, Delta, and the two junior airlines for Delta and United – one named Skywest and the other TED. God, I don’t even know how to get boarding passes for all those flights! I’m certainly not checking any luggage, as I doubt it would ever catch up with me.

I spent a good part of the day at the MovieStop rummaging through their used movies to find some to watch on those flights.  I also hit Target and found one of my favorite movies – “The Philadelphia Story” a 1940 flick with Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and my favorite actor of all time, James Stewart. The wife and I got into our jammies this evening and popped some popcorn and watch it. What an awesome movie. Of course, Hepburn is also one of my top five favorite actresses of all times.

Tomorrow is another day at work, but then I’m off to cold weather. Awesome.

Peace out people.

If you love Katharine Hepburn, you’ll love this too.
The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater will be opening in the summer of 2009 in Hepburn’s hometown of Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

To stay up on all things Hepburn go to the website.

  3. Your story is very true: preparation for the trip is half the journey. And I’ve never heard of anyone preferring to break a flight up into such small chunks … but I don’t doubt your methodology, if nothing else you sound prepared. I actually get nervous if I over prepare … I’m probably just the opposite.

Well, where I am going requires at least one stop, usually two anyway. I just rather not be stuck in those seats longer than three hours if I can help it. Back problems.

I usually over prepare and then forget something anyway….

  5. Just let go of the control issues and enjoy the process. I know — advice you didnt ask for But I am giving it anyways
