Yes, I do candy bar reviews. You wanna make something of it? I thought not. OK, today I am reviewing Godivia’s Sugar Free Chocolate bar, which as noted seventeen times on the package, is “Not a low calorie food”. Photograph below.
I love chocolate, and while the word “love” is frequently overused, especially by yours truly, I must state that in this case it is not. I love chocolate. However, Type II diabetes hampers my enjoyment of the wonderful substance. So, when I saw “Sugar Free” and the name “Godiva”, I thought to myself, “Self, I wonder if this will taste like stale construction paste like all the other sugar free chocolates?” I figured with a name like Godiva, it might actually taste good. So, I purchased a bar, took it home and unwrapped it. Warning! Below is a photograph of naked chocolate!
The “G”probably stands for “Godiva” but it is possible it stands for “Gosh”.
I carefully rinsed my mouth with highly chlorinated Pembroke Pines city water to remove any remaining skin on my tongue. I could now taste this so called sugar free chocolate!
The texture was firm, with a definite bite required to break off a piece. However, after a couple of chews as it falls onto your tongue it begins to melt. Very smooth and creamy in texture now.
The flavor? Since there is no chemical artificial sugar, there is no shovel metal after taste. In fact, no after taste at all. It actually tastes good. It isn’t a sweet as a giant tablespoon full of raw sugar coated with honey being jammed into your mouth, but then again, what is? It is low key, smooth, creamy and tastes like milk chocolate. In fact, you can almost imagine the milk. I would eat this, if I liked weak milk chocolate, which unfortunately I do not. I mean, it isn’t bad, but I’ll go for something darker any day of the week, except for Wednesday. (That’s another story.)
So, on taste along, if you like milk chocolate, I would recommend this.
Now, let’s look at the ingredients. Hmmm…not much. Milk Chocolate coating, which adds a negligible amount of sugar. Chocolate, cocoa butter, Oh-oh – Maltitol which is a sugar alcohol which, if you consume too much will have a laxative effect. Yes, eat too much of this and you will sit up and take notice.
It is slowly absorbed into the system so is slightly better for diabetics than sucrose.
So, it does have a sugar substitute in it. I wouldn’t know by taste. Maltitol is also a carb. This is probably why this 190 calorie bar also has 25 grams of carbs. That is a lot of carbs for a 1.5 oz bar of chocolate.
I give this three Hershey’s Kisses out of a possible five.

Merry Christmas Eve folks!

Hey there -
I just came across your blog and was wondering if you still have this wrapper around. My dog ingested 2 of these bars (someone left it out when I wasn’t at the house) and I can’t see the ingredients on the back of the wrapper b/c it is so chewed up. Any chance you can either take a pic of the back or let me know the ingredients? Thanks soooo much.
Out of town now. But there wasn’t anything bad in it, except for the maltitol that can
have a laxative effect. Good luck!
